Residents of the Zambezi region have expressed concerns about the scarcity of bream, the region’s staple dish, as the river dries up.
The scarcity of the Zambezi bream is also attributed to overfishing.
The Zambezi bream trade, a crucial source of income for many villagers, especially women who buy directly from fishermen and sell the fish fresh or dried at the Katima Mulilo open market, is now reportedly becoming scarce according to experienced local fishermen.
“We used to catch plenty of fish around the Schukmansberg streams, but now you can paddle around the river for hours without a single catch,” said Monga Sitali, a resident whose father was a local experienced fisherman.
