The total number of active SIM cards in Namibia decreased by 5% during the second quarter of 2024 (1 April to 30 June), according to the Communications Regulatory Authority of Namibia (CRAN).

This decline was primarily due to a 6% drop in prepaid SIM cards.

Helene Vosloo, CRAN’s Executive of Economics & Market Development, attributed the reduction to longer-validity prepaid packages offered by service providers, as well as the implementation of SIM card registration requirements, which stipulate that only registered SIM cards remain active.

“As a result, mobile broadband usage on mobile phones decreased by 11%, leading to a reduction in the share of SIMs accessing the internet, from 66% to 61%,” Vosloo stated.
